How long have you been a member of the NSC? Since the mid 1980’s.

Credit where credit is long overdue!
April 4, 2012 As anyone who has stayed in the lodge recently would agree, the new “back room” has been a fabulous addition to the house. Not only does it provide members with a warm, inviting place to hang out après ski, but it has created a quieter zone in the front of the house adjacent to the first and second floor bedrooms. But none of this would have been possible without the persistence, dedication and sweat equity of a group of members who had the vision for the back room and worked to make it a reality.
The Norwalk Ski Club Board would like to recognize these members and their contributions. We’ve tried to include everyone, but please let us know if we’ve left anyone out.
Ron Arendt, who was one of the original advocates of the back room renovation project and drew up the original plans, and built the fireplace and surround, and provided construction services throughout the project.
Howard and Lauren Stephens, who rallied support for the project.
Larry Ogren, who also rallied support for the project, and who provided continued support for it under his term as president of the club.
Joe Frank, who was also literally there from the ground floor up, helping to rip out the original, rotted floor boards, lay the new floor and frame the walls.
Jim Silvester, who managed much of the critical logistics work, including a feasibility study, design and construction requirements, the building department permitting and filing process, and the construction budget and timeline.
Joe Carter, who worked with Jim Silvester on much of the upfront work, and took on the responsibility of retaining and managing the subcontractors, filing the required permits, as well as researching, and purchasing materials that included the insulation system, fans and lighting fixtures.
John Guth, who specified the heating system.
Joe Schettino, who did all the sheetrock and taping, so the walls were paint-ready.
Tim Freeland, who provided a substantial amount of labor throughout the construction process.
Matt Offredi, who generously donated over $1200 worth of carpeting for the entry porch, lobby area and phone room as well as the tack boards installed on the wall in the dining area.
Chris Sullivan, who has expertly managed the NSC finances, making it possible for the club to take on such an involved project, and who secured the line of credit, and her husband Rocky, who was involved in the construction process.
Ray Traggianese, who organized work weekends to move the project forward and who also contributed his own labor, working on projects that included sanding and finishing the floors.
Mary Traggianese, who is responsible for all the finishing touches including the color scheme, furnishings and rug.

11/17 Work Weekend Accomplishments
A big thanks to all the members who went up to the Lodge for the 11/17-11/18 work weekend to get the lodge ready for ski season. Over the course of the weekend, they installed a new range (donated by the Traggianeses) in the kitchen, de-cluttered the garage, basement, pantry and kitchen, reorganized and stocked the supply closet, made two trips to the dump, moved any unlabeled ski gear to a new Lost & Found Department in the garage, started to update the electrical outlets in the bedrooms, and did general cleaning throughout the house. The work weekend crew included the following members:
Rocco Kohut Larry Ruddy Ron Arendt Alex Arendt Joe Frank Paul Blish
Adam Blish Jim Silvester John Silvester Bill Parlet Tim Freeland

OktoberFEST II A Marvelous Success!
October 20, 2012 Thank you for all who came and made Oktoberfest II, a delicious, fun, weekend in VT! Check out the pix on our website Photo & More page.
Everyone brought a great party spirit and delicious food and beverages to share. The air at times had a chill and we were occasionally challenged with spritzes of rain with a few downpours mixed in, but it didn’t dampen the spirits of those who came. Members and guests still enjoyed hiking, mountain biking, golfing, shopping, chili at the Cook-off on Depot Street and good vibes at the ParrotHead Party. Colors on top of Okemo and Killington inspired photos and fed our souls. The fire tower enticed some of the brave and Buttermilk Falls drew us in with it’s placid ponds, rushing waters and scenic trails.
It’s a beautiful time of year to be in Vermont with so much going on. There wasn’t enough time to see or do all that was available. Can’t wait until next year to explore some more pre-ski season activities with you.
In the meantime, the snow will soon be flying (I hope) and we’ll be enjoying the winter experience. Hope we’ll see you soon on the slopes in the white stuff!
October 16, 2012 Thank you to all the Norwalk Ski Club members who volunteered at the Easton firemen’s food booth during the annual Easton Carnival this past July 31 – August 4th. Because club members work the food booth every year, we are able to use the Easton Firehouse for our annual Holiday and End-of-Season parties. The seventeen members who rolled up their sleeves for the 2012 carnival were:
Mike Solomon Rocky Sullivan Howard Stephens Carol Herrick Rob McCullough Claire McCullough Steve Keogh Willy Kaye Barbara MacDonald
Peter MacDonald Angela Annino Larry Ogren Christina Ogren Ingo Zalik Larry Scharbach Rocco Kohut Frank Petras
September 10, 2012 The membership renewal form is online. Membership renewals were due by July 1, 2012. The final renewal deadline is 12/1/12. Any member who has not renewed their membership by 12/1/12 will have to rejoin the club, which involves paying the initiation fee and the annual membership fee. To avoid this, please mail in your membership renewal form and check now to Diana Heitsmith, Membership Chairman 386 Morehouse Road Easton CT 06612.
Lodge Availability 9/28-9/30/12
September 10, 2012 The Norwalk Ski Club has agreed to rent rooms/beds to the Crowleys, our Ludlow neighbors, the weekend of 9/28-9/30/12 so that they can provide accommodations for their guests who are coming to Ludlow for a Crowley family member's wedding. The Keogh's will be staying at the lodge that weekend to serve as the member hosts for the Crowley's guests. Please be advised that for that weekend, there will be a limited number of beds available for NSC lodge members.
NSC Members Complete Another Successful Work Weekend
June 14, 2012 Tim Freeland reports that the June 2nd - 3rd work weekend was quite successful, despite the weather. Working in the rain, Larry Ruddy and John Caviullo cut down weeds, spread topsoil and planted grass. Barbara Ruddy and Joann Caviullo changed the fabric on many of the bunk boards so members will no longer have strings hanging in their faces while they sleep. Joe Frank worked on the basement floor, because unfortunately the dust from the sewer construction llast fall turned to mud and removal required scraping the floor with a shovel for several hours. Hopefull the floor will dry out in the fall once the heat is turned on, and then we can give the floor another cleaning to remove the rest of the residue.
Chris Frank power washed the outside of the lodge, getting rid of the green mold and the mud on the siding. Angels Annino cleaned out the refrigerators. Rocco Kohut changed the outlets in all the bedrooms to the 3-prong tamper proof style required by the new code, and complete other miscellaneous electrical work.
In addition, the kitchen faucet was changed out and the disposal was removed, so we shouldn’t have any more leaking under the sink. Note however, because we no longer have a disposal, please gather up food scraps from the sink and deposit them in the trash can.
Everyone pitched in to clean out the garage bay and take a load of garbage to the transfer station.
All in all, it was a great and very productive weekend!
June 2nd - 3rd: Last work weekend of the season!
May 2, 2012 The weekend of June 2nd -3rd is going to be the last work weekend of the season. Please consider coming up and enjoy the camaraderie of your fellow members while helping out with various maintenance and improvement projects, including replacing the kitchen faucet, cleaning out and defrosting the refrigerators, emptying the pantry and seeding the lawn where needed. This is also a great way to earn points for reduced rate lodge fees for the 2012-2013 season. For more information, contact Tim Freeland at email@example.com.
End of Season Party April 26th!!!
April 12, 2012 All members are invited to the Norwalk Ski Club's annual/traditional end-of-season party, to be held Thursday April 26th from 7:00pm to 9:30pm at the Easton Firehouse. The club will provide paper goods, and beverages, and club members are asked to bring hearty vegetable or meat appetizers, a main course dish or a dessert to share.
Bring your unused ticket vouchers with you because this meeting is also the opportunity for any club member to return them for credit to be applied to next season's ticket voucher purchase. Note that most resorts limit the amount of credit they offer, and that this amount is determined by how many vouchers are returned. Due to the poor ski conditions this past winter, many clubs/members may be holding unused vouchers, making it unlikely that anyone will receive full credit for their vouchers. John Saresky will post the credit amount due to each member returning unused vouchers by mid-summer.
Also note that membership renewals for the ski season 2012/2013 are due JULY 1, 2012. Please send in your membership renewal to Diana Heitsmith by that date in order to avoid a late fee.

Okemo Closing Day 3/25
March 24, 2012 Okemo has announced that Sunday March 25th will be the last day for skiing/snowboarding this year due to lack of snow. If you have unused vouchers, this is the weekend to use them up! And check out the local ski shops for deals on equipment and clothing!
Norwalk Ski Club member James Silvester stands on a mountain of snow right outside the lodge.
March 8, 2012 Okemo has received quite a bit of snow in the past week (not quite as much as shown in the photo above, which was taken a few years ago), but enough that as of 3/8, they have 116 slopes open. With temperatures reaching into the low 40's over the next few days, it's a great time to catch some spring skiing! So grab your gear and come on up!
Interclub Racing is alive and well! So too, the Apres Ski!
Left: Tony Favale - Grumman, Right: Rolf Meyer - NSC
February 27, 2012 Okemo did it’s magic on the not-so-new-snow and the NASTAR course was very skiable, even for those of us unaccustomed to flirting with the flags. The sun showed it’s face just as we started our race (a good omen) and everyone was ready to rock down the course on Bull Run.
This year, the Norwalk, Manchester and Grumman Clubs were joined for the first time by Mt Laurel to make it a four-club event. Grumman won overall honors with the most participants and most points earned in a number of age groups. Although we were the smallest team this year, we made up for it in enthusiasm. Our stellar team Mike Solomon, Rolf Meyer, John Saresky, Lauren Stephens, Howard Stephens, Michael Caruso , Mike Caruso, Chris Vitale, Christopher Vitale turned in some amazing results. Both NASTAR and club awards were earned by participating skiers and for the first time ever, snow boarders.
The two fastest men on the course were our own members Mike Solomon with a best time of 18.90 sec. and Rolf Meyer at 19.30 sec. Additional NASTAR medals were earned by our club members as well.
Mike Solomon - NASTAR Platinum Rolf Meyer – NASTAR Platinum Michael Caruso – NASTAR Gold Chris Vitale – NASTAR Gold John Saresky – NASTAR Silver Lauren Stephens – NASTAR Silver Howard Stephens – NASTAR Bronze
The traditional après ski party with all 4 clubs offered everyone the chance to socialize and celebrate with refreshments and tall stories as we awarded the racers with accolades and recognition for their efforts. This year, for the first time, the Grumman Club hosted the party at their lodge and gave a warm reception to all racers. Next year we’ll have the opportunity to share our hospitality when we host the party at the NSC lodge.
We look forward to having more of our members come join the race as well as the party next time. Whether you are a skier or boarder, whether you’ve never raced before, or race every day, it’s the perfect opportunity to try it out and enjoy some great après ski fun.
Bravo to this year’s team members for representing us and to John Saresky for coordinating this annual event!
